Phone orders vs delivery apps: commission-free ordering for New Jersey restaurants

Delivery apps bring new customers, and they charge for it. Phone orders to your own line carry no commission at all. Here is how the numbers compare on one order.

What the apps charge in 2026

DoorDash publishes three marketplace plans for restaurants: Basic at 15% of each delivery order, Plus at 25% and Premier at 30%, with pickup orders at 6%.

Uber Eats lists Lite at 20%, Plus at 25% and Premium at 30% of each delivery order, with pickup at 7% for restaurants with validated in-store pricing and 10% otherwise. Its pricing page notes a lower Lite fee in some places, and New Jersey is one of them: 15% for delivery and 5% for pickup.

Those fees pay for real things: the apps bring new customers and run the drivers. The question is not whether to use them, but which orders need them. A regular who already knows your food does not need an app to find you.

Uber Eats delivery, Premium (30%)$12.00$28.00
DoorDash delivery, Plus (25%)$10.00$30.00

Card processing applies to every order, so it is left out to keep the comparison fair. Sales tax does not change it either: prepared food and beverages sold in restaurants are subject to New Jersey sales tax, 6.625% today, whichever way the order comes in.

Where commission-free orders come from

Your regulars already have your number. It is on your menus, your boxes, your Google listing and your website. Every regular who calls instead of tapping an app is an order with no commission, as long as someone answers.

  • Print your number big on boxes and bags, with a line like “Order direct: call us”.
  • Keep the number and the opening hours on your Google Business Profile right.
  • Put the number at the top of your website, as a tap-to-call link on phones.
  • Answer every call. A regular who gets voicemail on a Friday learns to use the app.

Answering every call without adding staff

That last point is where Ordero comes in. It answers your restaurant’s phone with AI, takes the order from your real menu in eight languages, reads it back with the total and puts it in your panel. Plans are a flat monthly price, from $500 a month with 100 calls a day included, and there is no commission on orders: a $40 order stays a $40 order.

For customers who would rather tap than talk, Ordero’s Online Order System is coming soon: your own ordering page, with no commission. And Ordero Mobile gives your restaurant its own app, with a loyalty program.
